NaFilm exhibition
This project of young cinematography students has been offering unusual experiences since December. You will certainly not be bored in the Prague Chicago Palace at Národní 32 with its interactive exhibits surrounding you with the magic of the film world. The NaFilm exhibition is devoted to the fundamentals of film and its first form, the second part unveils the fantastic world of the avant-garde movement between the World Wars while, in the last part, visitors learn about and try out the basic principles and film techniques. For example, Disney’s famous Alice was created using one of the first techniques of film animation, where each scene that the actors filmed was subsequently drawn in detail by the creators.
Czech Photo Centre
A short walk from Metro B – Nové Butovice, a fresh new Photo Gallery has sprung up, with big ambitions. This multi-genre art space comes under the wings of Czech Photo, the organizer of the prestigious Czech Press Photo competition. Its exhibition programme aims to focus on the work of leading Czech and international photographers, video installations and street-art projects. Take a moment to look at the new sculpture by Czech artist David Černý, just outside the gallery entrance. The Gulliver Airship
When your travels bring you to Prague 7, look to the clouds. The roof of the DOX Centre for Contemporary Art has become a landing pad for a unique architectural interloper, inspired by the elegantly shaped airships of the early 20th century. Gulliver creates a space where contemporary art meets literature – on the agenda are literary discussions, authors’ readings by writers and poets and other lofty topics. Vnitroblock
We may be hearing a lot more from that friendly duo, Lukáš Žďárský and Jakub Zajíc. They are applying their unprecedented enthusiasm to restoring Prague’s faded grandeur and transforming run-down buildings into cultural and social event centres. They took the former workshops and garages between Tusarova 31 and Dělnická 32 and created an industrial oasis for creative souls. Among the biggest attractions are Signature store & cafe, where apart from clothing, accessories and designer items for your apartment you can get a great coffee; there is the SECTOR dance room; or the truly minuscule and piddly-widdly projection space, aptly named PidiKino. Továrna
Another disused industrial building has come to life. This project, pithily entitled Továrna (‘The Factory’) is a gathering place for creative people from a range of fields. The original Holešovice steel-hardening shop has turned into a peerless and unpretentious place, open to interesting projects. According to the organizers, Továrna is to be an incubator for artisans, passionate bikers, progressive film-makers and creatives.
