An exhibition of the Slav Epic was opened in Prague in 2012 and has been visited by more than 380,000 people. This famous work by Alphonse Mucha is now being prepared for transport to Tokyo.
The large canvases depicting the history of the Slavs were exhibited for the last time in the Prague National Gallery on December 31, 2016. Now, this national cultural monument will go to Tokyo in connection with the declaration of 2017 as a Year of Czech Culture in Japan. The work will be exhibited there from 8 March to 5 June. Continuing the tour of the exhibition to China is also being considered.
The Slav Epic is expected to return to the Czech Republic in the middle of 2018. However, decisions are now being made about where the work will be exhibited. Consideration is being given to the creation of a new cultural centre with permanent exhibition of the Slav Epic.
Mucha worked on the Slav Epic in 1910 – 1928. In 1913, Mucha already publicly announced that the work would be donated to the city of Prague, with the condition that the city place the paintings in a special pavilion built at its own expense. In September of 1928, Mucha gave his work to the mayor of the city of Prague, and the Epic was exhibited in the Veletržní palác on the occasion of celebration of ten years of independence of the Czechoslovak state. Veletržní palác is one of the places being suggested for permanent exhibition after the Epic returns from its Asian tour.
