National Gallery Celebrates 222 Years of Existence

On 5 February 2018, it will be 222 years since the foundation of the National Gallery in Prague. Add the 100th anniversary of the foundation of Czechoslovakia and it is clear that the year 2018 in the National Gallery will be exceptional.

National Gallery Celebrates 222 Years of Existence
The programme of the National Gallery in Prague in 2018 will follow two main lines, and it will follow the current successful exhibition programme focusing on modern and contemporary art. If you visit the National Gallery on the weekend of 3 and 4 February, you can see all of the permanent expositions and exhibitions free of charge. Children, young people up to the age of 18 and students up to the age of 26 have free admission throughout the whole school year.  

News in 2018

src=The exhibition programme will traditionally open in February with the Grand Opening of the Trade Fair Palace. The great atrium will change into a dream land thanks to the Wunderbild installation by German artist Katharina Grosse, who prepared this work of art for Prague. You can also see the retrospective of Austrian artist Maria Lassnig (15/02 – 17/06/2018), who is considered to be one of the most original artists of the 20th century.

Do not miss the Czech Artists in Bretagne (1850-1950) exhibition in Kinský Palace at Old Town Square in the autumn, mapping the works of Czech artists who worked in Bretagne, influenced by important personalities of French art. From November 2018 to March 2019, you can see the works of Antonín Chittussi, Jan Zrzavý, Josef Čapek and Toyen together with the works of Paul Gauguin and Paul Sérusier.

The autumn programme will be dominated by the retrospective exhibition of famous Czech artist and graphic designed František Kupka in the Waldstein Riding School (07/09/2018 – 20/01/2019). The exhibition will introduce Kupka’s work from his early works from the 1890s to his abstract works from the 1950s. Thanks to ongoing cooperation with a French partner, the Gallery managed to prepare a unique collection that will be presented in Grand Palais in Paris in spring 2018, then in a modified version in the National Gallery in Prague in autumn 2018 and in the Ateneum Art Museum in Helsinki in spring 2019.

Hradčanské Square will come alive with contemporary art. Starting in June, you can see the first part of the famous international Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary collection from the fund of Francesca von Habsburg at Salmovský Palace.
 

New collection expositions

src=On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the foundation of Czechoslovakia (28 October) and the 50th anniversary of the events that took place in August 1968, two storeys of new collection expositions will open in the Trade Fair Palace.

The First Republic exhibition will be on display on the third storey of the Trade Fair Palace. The exposition will be dedicated to art from the beginning of the First Republic until 1938 and it will also include the famous French collection which the Czechoslovak government purchased only five years after its existence. The exposition will not only be limited to works of art, but it will have an interdisciplinary reach thanks to the presentation of other cultural and art areas of the First Republic, such as literature, design and applied graphic design.

On the second storey of the Trade Fair Palace, there will be a follow-up exposition mapping the development of art from the end of WWII to the present (1945-1989).
