Fifty Years of the Prague Castle Picture Gallery
On January 15th 2015, the Prague Castle Picture Gallery will celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of its opening. It wasn’t until the beginning of the 1960s that there was any proper evaluation of the Prague Castle art collection, even though a number of prominent artists were listed in the Castle records. The Special Advisor for the Maintenance of Prague Castle at the time, Dr. Jaromír Neumann, and a team of co-workers and art restorers, carried out research that revealed that there was a much greater number of remarkable works preserved in the collection than had originally been believed. In order to display these works properly the former Renaissance stables in the 2nd Courtyard were reconstructed, and a selection of the most important items were put on display under the name of The Prague Castle Picture Gallery. The ceremonial opening of the Gallery took place on January 15th 1965. The exhibition will celebrate not just this historic occasion, but also Jaromír Neumann himself on the 90th anniversary of his birth. Visitors will be able to see and admire the items that were part of Neumann’s original display but which are currently used to decorate the official rooms of Prague Castle that are not ordinarily accessible to the general public.
