We’ve spent months traveling through the Czech Republic experiencing the vast beauty and experiences this country as a destination has to offer including from exploring the medieval streets of Prague, road tripping from one storybook village to another, tasting our way through wine country, and more.
As magical as all the country is, the reason we love to keep coming back, is the locals who make us feel right at home as visitors.

For us, it was love at first sight. Perhaps my family’s Czech heritage plays a role, but after visiting for the first time in 2007 solo and returning together 10 years later, then again, and again it was clear that we had more than a surface level love for the country, we feel a deep connection with the Czech Republic from our experiences and time spent here.
This is a place that has welcomed us with open arms over and over again, and when it’s time we will be back.
Until then, we want to reminisce a few of fondest memories and stories we’ve gathered from our encounters with locals on our visits to the Czech Republic.
Since we are unable to visit physically, we want to show you through inspiration and stories of what makes the Czech Republic especially unique during these tough times we face together and to encourage everyone to explore their own memories from the Czech Republic whether you’re a lifelong citizen or a visitor like us.
One of our favorite ways to explore a destination is through the eyes of a local. As a regular traveler and visitor to destinations all over the world, there’s only so many places and things you can find through your own research. The truly special experiences are those shown to you through mingling and befriending the locals.
We were lucky to have met Honza, a local tour operator in Prague who was not only our guide for the day but more than that, a friend who we still talk regularly with to this day.
He showed us what Czech hospitality was all about welcoming us as visitors aboard his family’s boat on the Slapy Reservoir, a popular summer escape from Prague in Central Bohemia for locals that not very many visitors get to experience.
When sunshine turned to a downpour, our new friend welcomed us into his family’s home to dry off and literally offered us a shirt off his back to make sure were comfortable as his guests.
The hospitality and welcomeness we had that day is something we will never forget and is a reoccurring feeling that have throughout the country which makes us love the character and people of the Czech Republic more and more.

The Czech Republic is the world’s number one consumer of beer. From traditional to craft. Making it a haven for beer lovers like us. There’s no better way to enjoy some pivo than with a local on one of the most unique beer experiences and journeys you can enjoy in the world through the beer trail in South Bohemia.
We were fortunate to meet a Tomas who is now our friend on our first trip to the Czech Republic. On every visit since we have always made it a priority to meet up for some of that legendary Czech beer and catch up.
On our most recent visit we had an invitation to explore the historic beer trail of South Bohemia with him where we visited the scenic region stopping at castle after castle and town after town making beer breaks at some of the most incredible local microbreweries along the way where beer production has been taking place for centuries.
During our beer breaks we laughed and learned about local folklore and the story of Vodník, also known as the Waterman who put living fear in children to not linger too closely to bodies of water or making up songs about the castles we visited or the pivo we were drinking. It was a jolly time.
Stopping at historic and beautiful castles and sites that we would have never found or been able to discover on our own all with the local friendship we made, because people here are really eager to share their beautiful country and create memories with their visitors.
Our five day journey through South Bohemia is still one of our most memorable experiences to this day.

One of our fondest memories and encounters with a local was on a rainy day in the small city of Kroměříž. We were feeling guilty and panicked as we were running late to meet our local Moravian guide for the day, Mr. Urbanovsky.
We felt terrible that we had kept him waiting as we were running behind and had no way to communicate that with him. Any person would have the right to feel annoyed or frustrated, but not our guide. He was completely understanding and incredibly welcoming and friendly even though we had kept him patiently waiting for our arrival.
We were scheduled to visit all the wonders of Kroměříž and had enough time to just see the gorgeous Kroměříž Gardens and Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site before the weather took a turn for the worse and completely disrupted the rest of our plans.
While our guide could have been completely justified to be frustrated that we made it impossible for him to show us all his scheduled activities, he instead was happy to improvise and show us his favorite local spots that were rainy day friendly including a behind the scenes look and sampling chocolate from a local chocolatier, enjoying a coffee at one of his favorite spots with a view at a café with a terrace overlooking the town center, and enjoying his local stories and learning a bit about each other over a beer at a local brewery.
While we might have missed all of the famous tourist attractions, we ended up leaving with a better memory of Kroměříž, by just getting to know one of its incredible locals whose patience, kindness and willingness to show us a good time we will never forget.

One of the first destinations we visited together in the Czech Republic that truly fascinated us early on in our trip and knew would be a place we’d want to return to was Kutna Hora.
Many people come just for a quick day trip from Prague to see the UNESCO World Heritage Site and the famous bone cathedral known as Sedlec Ossuary missing out on spending more time to get to know this gorgeous and captivating town and the rest that it has to offer including it’s incredibly warm and inviting locals.
Like others we were impressed and awestruck by the beauty of St. Barbara’s Cathedral which is in our opinion one of the most impressive structures in all of Central Europe and was proudly completely funded and constructed over 600 years by the local silver miners.
And that’s not all, we could go on about all the beautiful monuments and historic sites in Kutna Hora that made us return. But what happened when we did return made us love Kutna Hora even more and want to return again and again.
Even though we only spent two days here the year before we were surprised to find that a few of the locals remembered us from our previous visit.
We showed up to The Chocolate Museum to buy more of their amazing chocolate, this is where we sampled and shopped chocolate the year before and the woman behind the counter remembered us and was excited to see us back.
When we checked into our hotel, we were greeted with a note that said Welcome Back Scott & Megan!
This is a place that really cherishes its visitors, never have we ever felt so welcome in all of our travels. We look forward to returning and experiencing this incredible place once again.

For anyone who has had the privilege to experiencing the unrivaled beauty of Bohemian Switzerland will understand comparing this place to a fantasy world.
The magical sandstone rock formations to the lush green forests, the Gorges of Kamenice, the majestic Pravčická brána to the charming local folk cottages. You truly feel as though you’ve escaped reality into a dream or fantasy world here in Bohemian Switzerland National Park.
While you could explore this area on your own you’d be missing out on some of the best hidden treasures in the park by not going with a local or a guide. We have went not once but twice on different visits with the same local sustainable tour company with the friendliest of guides that make you feel more like you’re on a trip with a friend than on a paid tour.
With their help we got to find hidden gems and enjoy a completely one of a kind experience sipping freshly brewed coffee by hand on the Elbe Sandstone Rock Formations overlooking the valley below to walking along hidden trails only locals would know.
Both times, our guides Vojtech and Marek were beyond your average tour guide. Joining in on the silly songs and games we make up when we travel or are on the road and helping us getting the perfect photo, showing us some of their secret spots, and really leaving a great impression on how Czech people treat their visitors.
We will never forget our time enchanted in the surreal beauty and fantasy world of Bohemian Switzerland with amazing company who is eager to share the beauty and uniqueness of their own backyard with visitors like us.
