From 12 October 2025, the Entry/Exit System (EES) will be gradually introduced at the external borders of the Schengen Area. The modern digital system will contribute to reducing waiting times at the borders and to better security.
The EES will be gradually introduced at all external border crossing points of 29 European countries, including Czechia. The gradual rollout of the EES will last six months (during this period, travellers’ data may not be collected at every border crossing point right away). From 10 April 2026, the EES is to be fully operational in all these countries..

The obligation to register in the system will apply to all non-EU nationals travelling to the countries using the EES for a short stay – up to 90 days within a 180-day period – whether travelling with a visa or visa-free.

At each entry and exit, the system will digitally record data from the travel document, the date and place of border crossing, as well as biometric data. The EES will thus make it possible to accurately monitor the permitted length of stay and prevent overstays. Travellers’ data will be collected and stored in full compliance with EU data protection rules and rights.

The EES will speed up border crossings through greater use of self-service kiosks and automated checks, while also increasing security at the external borders and improving protection against illegal migration and fraud.
