November 1 2024 - November 24 2024
Janáček Brno
The motto of this year’s festival Janáček Brno is No limits!... and Czech music is limitless. During the three festival weeks, enjoy the unique genius loci of Brno – a multicultural city full of beautiful architecture, art, and gastronomy, where the masterpieces of Leoš Janáček, one of the musical geniuses of the twentieth century, were born.

The programme is dedicated to Czech composers, and wonderful performances of well-known works and real rarities given by Czech and foreign artists have been prepared for festival-goers, providing a simply wonderful résumé of what Czech music has offered us.

The festival is to open with Janáček’s The Excursions of Mr Brouček, directed by the world-famous Robert Carsen with Nicky Spence in the title role. The Berlin Opera will be presenting The Makropulos Affair in a spectacular production by director Claus Guth with the wonderful Dorothea Röschmann in the role of Emilia Marty, while the opera The Charlatan by Janáček’s pupil Pavel Haas is to return to the Mahen Theatre for the first time since its world premiere, this time performed by the Ostrava Opera Company and directed by Ondřej Havelka!

We are celebrating not just the Year of Czech Music, but also 100 years since the inception of the iconic opera belonging to Brno – The Cunning Little Vixen! Adam Plachetka and Kateřina Kněžíková will also be celebrating the event as the Forester and the vixen Sharp-Ears.

A festival in a town with style!

Brno, the Moravian capital, with excellent air, train, and bus connections; half-way between Prague and Vienna. A city with historical and modern, vibrant architecture, parks, fountains, trendy bars, and picturesque cafés. A city loved by Janáček, who spent here more than 50 years of his life.
