Telč Chateau, a UNESCO-protected gem, opens to visitors!
After extensive reconstruction, the Renaissance treasure nestled in the picturesque town of Telč, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has opened its gates to visitors! Take a look at places that have not been accessible before! You can peek behind the scenes and observe restorers at work, explore the mysterious castle underground, or even 'get imprisoned' in a historical jocular chair.

Among the many novelties prepared after the three-year reconstruction of Telč Chateau are new guided tours, a modern visitor center, and year-round operation. You can look forward to exquisitely restored interiors, historical artifacts, and modifications to the exteriors, including the chateau gardens.

Rose of the Highlands a movie star

UNESCO Telč Chateau Garden after reconstruction

The transformation of the Rose of Vysočina as the Renaissance palace in Telč is affectionately called, will bring joy not only to visitors but also to filmmakers. The chateau has long been one of the most popular filming locations in Czechia. Several movies and fairytales, such as "Angelika" (2013), the German version of "Joan of Arc" (2013), and many others, have been shot here.

Two new guided tours have been added to the existing ones. The exposition of the Chateau Museum will be opened on the second floor of the southern palace, and the spaces of the former guest rooms in the most beautiful part of this route, with a view of the Telč square resembling a marzipan town, will be accessible.

A rarity among nobles

As part of the new route, you will also see the posthumous portrait of Zachariáš of Hradec, the owner of the castle, who transformed the Gothic castle into a Renaissance palace. The painting, which was long considered lost and was eventually found in the picturesque town of Slavonice, completes the collection of funeral insignia of this nobleman. Zachariáš of Hradec is thus one of the few Renaissance nobles whose appearance is known in all stages of his life from childhood to old age!

Sit down, and you won't get up! Not all breweries are the same...

Czech historical town of Telč protected by UNESCO, Central Europe

The newly accessible space is the depository in the former castle brewery, where you can enjoy an unusual exhibition called "Treasures Behind the Curtain." It not only presents unique items that have been hidden from the public eye until now but also allows you to observe restorers at work! One of the treasures of the Telč collections is a Renaissance jocular chair with a secret mechanism that traps its user. You don't have to just look at this piece; you can even try it out yourself!

Do not miss the annual historical festival! (August 18–19, 2023)

Annual historical festival in Czech UNESCO town of Telč

The historical festival of Zachariáš of Hradec and Catherine of Valdštejn, dedicated to the noble couple that both the town and the chateau owe their beauty to, takes place at the end of August every year. The Square of Zachariáš of Hradec fills with a period market, historical artisans, theatre performances in costumes and various stands with good food and drinks. You must not miss that!
