Year after year, European newspapers and various travel media name the Czech Republic's capital, Prague, as one of the most popular destinations during the Christmas season. Not without reason, Czech Christmas markets are some of the most beautiful in Europe, and the Christmas markets in Prague, surrounded by the city's beautiful historic buildings, are some of the most atmospheric in the country.
Staroměstské náměstí
29.11.2025 - 6.1.2026The largest and most important Christmas market in the Czech Republic is held every year at Staroměstské náměstí (Old Town Square) in the historic city center. Here, the stalls of the Christmas market and the beautiful and well-preserved buildings create an atmosphere that can only be described as a fairytale. An atmosphere where old Christmas traditions and the city's history come together. The Christmas market is not only the most important Christmas market in the Czech Republic, it is also the Christmas market with the biggest and tallest Christmas tree in the country. The tree is carefully selected and lit every year on the day the Christmas market opens, in 2025 on November 29.
The Christmas market consists of around a hundred stalls offering Christmas goods and Czech crafts and design from different Czech regions. You can buy mouth-blown Christmas balls and other glass decorations from the northern Czech Republic, crocheted Christmas decorations from Moravia, as well as other traditional decorations such as cookie cutters, candlesticks, Advent wreaths, decorated ceramics, candles, nativity scenes, wooden toys and much more. Of course, the stalls also offer many edible Czech Christmas specialties, such as Christmas sweets and cookies, homemade chocolate, sausages or microbrewery beers and spirits and more. Be sure to try "svařené víno", the Czech form of mulled wine, which is a spiced and heated red wine sold everywhere on the market. The square also features a stage where ensembles from the Czech Republic and abroad perform. The Christmas market stalls are open from 10:00 to 22:00, with food and drink stalls open until 24:00. You can spend many hours at the Christmas market on Staroměstské náměstí without getting bored, but the market is just one of the many Christmas markets in the city.

Václavské náměstí
Václavské náměstí - 29.11.2025 - 6.1.2026Several other neighborhoods in Prague host their own Christmas markets, which are not as big as the Christmas market on Staroměstské náměstí, but each have their own cozy atmosphere. Christmas Market on Václavské náměstí (Wenceslas Square) is just a few steps from Staroměstské náměstí. It is located on Prague's main square, with the well-known Czech National Museum building at the top end, where a number of charming wooden stalls offer handmade crafts, various delicacies and of course "svařené víno". The stalls have the same opening hours as Staroměstské náměstí.
