Two Czech cities have been awarded the title of European Capital of Culture in the past 30 years: Prague in 2000 and Plzeň 15 years later.
The title of European Capital of Culture has been awarded by the European Union to one or more European cities for a year since 1985. It allows the chosen cities to present their cultural life and its development to Europe throughout the year. Over 60 European cities, from metropolises to small towns, have held the title of European Capital of Culture.
