Jáchymov – royal mint and communist camp

Jáchymov is a place with a long and unsettled history. In modern times, silver was mined here and coins minted. After 1950 a work camp was established here for troublesome political prisoners, who mined uranium under inhumane conditions.
Emperor Ferdinand I had the mint built, preserving the core and several features of what was originally a Renaissance building. The building’s current appearance dates back to the Baroque. In the exhibition, you will learn about the greatest boom of the mint and Renaissance culture, about Jáchymov in the era of the radon spa industry (a spa clinic can for example also be seen) as well as about the dark period in the town’s history – the fate of political prisoners in the 1950s.
