Houska Castle, located near Lake Máchovo in Central Bohemia, is one of the country’s most intriguing and mysterious historic sites. Built in the 13th century, it is often called a “gateway to hell” due to legends claiming that a large hole in its basement was once a portal to the underworld, supposedly sealed by the castle’s builders.

Castle Houska from Discovery Channel

Unlike many castles, Houska was never designed for defense or luxury; instead, it was constructed over this supposed chasm, adding to its eerie reputation. Visitors are drawn by its unique Gothic architecture, well-preserved interiors, and the sense of mystery surrounding its legends.

"The gateway to Hell" is said to be guarded by a terrifying faceless black monk, though its exact location remains a mystery. Some believe it lies beneath the castle chapel, others in the castle well - wherever your imagination leads you. The rock that pierces through the entire castle is a remarkable feature, visible both in the courtyard outside and within the castle walls.

Houska has even been recognized internationally, making it onto lists of the world’s most mysterious castles, and it was featured in popular travel shows such as the Travel Channel’s “Legendary Locations” and SyFy’s “Ghost Hunters International”.

The Mystical Landscape Around Houska

The countryside around the castle is beautiful and invites visitors to bike rides or strolls. You can visit many interesting castles and châteaux nearby, such as Bezděz, Ralsko or Kokořín.

Czechia itself is often called the “Capital of Castles” due to the exceptionally high density of castles and chateaux across its territory. With hundreds of historic fortresses, castles, and manor houses, the country offers a unique journey through medieval and Renaissance architecture, making it a must-visit destination for lovers of history, legends, and cultural heritage.
