Discover Verbuňk – a traditional male dance from the Czech Republic, originating in the region of Moravian Slovakia and inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list since 2005. This dynamic folk dance is one of the most distinctive expressions of Czech cultural heritage, blending music, singing, and expressive movement into a powerful performance.
Verbuňk is performed by men in traditional folk costumes, accompanied by cimbalom or brass bands. Its name comes from the German word Werbung (recruitment), reflecting its origins as a farewell dance of young men leaving for military service.
The dance typically follows a three-part structure: it begins with singing, continues with a slower rhythmic section, and builds into a fast, energetic finale featuring jumps, spins, knee bends, and rhythmic clapping.
The best dancers compete every year in the prestigious competition for the best verbíř, held during the International Folklore Festival in Strážnice. Today, Verbuňk exists in several regional styles and remains an essential part of traditional festivals and celebrations, symbolising pride, freedom, and a deep connection to local heritage.

A Dance of Freedom and Individual Expression
What makes Verbuňk truly exceptional is its improvisation. There is no fixed choreography – each dancer creates his own unique performance, expressing personality, skill, and regional identity. Although often performed in groups, each dancer performs individually, making every interpretation different. The dance typically follows a three-part structure: it begins with singing, continues with a slower rhythmic section, and builds into a fast, energetic finale featuring jumps, spins, knee bends, and rhythmic clapping.
