Alfa Palace in Brno

Alfa Palace in Brno

Enter the house that (almost) became Brno’s first skyscraper

A 14-floor house – this was something entirely unheard of in the Brno of the 1920s, yet this is what the original plan by architect František Hrdina contained. Regulatory measures and complex static provisions finally allowed only for an eight-floor complex.
The palace consists of a two-floor shopping passage with galleries, sheltered by a glass, see-through ceiling, which provides for lighting. Those who live in one of its 180 flats can enter the building using one of its eight entrances. In addition to business space, flats and cafés the building also harbours a music club and, in place of a former cinema with capacity of up to 800 people, there is a theatre hall. Through the shopping passage you can walk to the Omega Department Store (opened in 2006) – its name was chosen because of its connection with the Alfa Palace.
