The Břevnov Monastery, the oldest male monastery in Bohemia, has been connected to beer brewing since its founding in 993. It was here that the first written mention of beer brewing in Czech territory appeared—making Břevnov the birthplace of the country’s brewing tradition.
Revival of a Legendary Brewery
After centuries of brewing—with a few historical interruptions—the original monastic brewery ceased operations in 1889 due to insufficient cellar capacity. The building was later demolished in 1953 during road expansion. However, in 2011, this long-standing tradition was revived with the construction of a modern brewery in the beautifully restored Baroque stables.Today, the St. Adalbert Monastic Brewery carries on the legacy as the direct successor of the oldest documented brewery in Czechia. Brewing equipment is mostly Czech-made, and beer is produced using a combination of traditional techniques and modern craft innovation.
Craft, Tradition and Taste
Each year, the brewery produces around 20 beer styles, including six core varieties. The range spans from classic Czech lagers to international top-fermented styles. Some beers are aged in barrels, while others are brewed for cellaring. The brewery’s capacity reaches up to 6,000 hectolitres annually. The Břevnovský Benedict beer can be enjoyed on-site at the Klášterní výčep (Taproom) in the historic Baroque granary and at the Klášterní šenk restaurant, as well as at selected locations across Prague. The brewery also houses a small museum and a permanent glassware exhibition, and a demonstration hop garden outside highlights the connection between Břevnov and Czech hop-growing tradition.
A Living Heritage Within Monastic Walls
The brewery is an integral part of the historic Břevnov Monastery, which was returned to the Benedictine order in 1990 and is now protected as a national cultural monument. Nearby, visitors can stroll through peaceful gardens, discover the Orangery and the Chapel of St. Joseph (“Josefka”), or attend a wedding in this one-of-a-kind setting. For those who wish to fully immerse themselves in the monastery’s timeless atmosphere, Hotel Adalbert offers comfortable accommodation directly within the monastic complex.
The St. Adalbert Brewery is more than just a brewery—it’s a meeting point of sacred heritage, Czech craftsmanship, and a brewing tradition that has stood the test of time.
