Combine a stroll through the Prague botanical garden with a tasting of wines from the local vineyards. You can enjoy guided tastings or buy the entire range of wines at the local wine shop which is the only seller of Troja wines. Thanks to the St. Claire's Vineyard, the Botanical Garden Prague belongs among the world's unique sites. It is one of the few botanical gardens with such a large production vineyard.

Get to know the vineyards and St. Claire

In the vineyard, you will see all the grape varieties that are allowed for cultivation and wine production in Czechia. You will also learn about the processing of grapes and see historical wine-making objects such as old presses, vats and barrels. On one of the vineyard terraces, you can test your sense of smell at the Scent Tree. The dominant feature not only of the vineyard but also of the whole area of Troja is a small Baroque chapel dedicated to St. Claire, the patroness and namesake of the builder's wife Claire Bernardina.

It is not known exactly when the vineyard was founded, but the warm slope was certainly used by Emperor Charles IV, who founded the Charles bridge in Prague, when he planted it with vines. Viticulture flourished most during the reign of Emperor Rudolf II. Prague was then called the 'city of wine'.

The range of vines

The extensive range of vines of St. Claire's Vineyard consists of a production section and a demonstration section. The production part is made up of white grape varieties such as Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, Sauvignon, Muscat of Moravia, Tramín Red and Pinot Noir. Among the red grape varieties, there is Blue Portugal and Pinot Noir. Newly, the vineyard produces sparkling wine and port-type wine Fortis Magna. Red wines are aged in oak barrels for a minimum of two years.

Thanks to the excellent terroir and the experience of local winemakers, the grapes are of very high quality and the wines produced from them have already won several prestigious awards at home and abroad.
