The Milovice Nature Reserve, often called the “European Serengeti”, is the only place in the Czech Republic where you can see wild horses, European bison, and aurochs living together in one area. Located in a former military zone near Prague, this exceptional destination offers a rare insight into natural ecosystem restoration.
A unique wildlife experience in the Czech Republic
Since 2015, the reserve has transformed a former military training ground into a thriving natural habitat. Large herbivores such as Exmoor wild horses, European bison, and back-bred aurochs play a key role in maintaining species-rich meadows and steppe landscapes. Their natural grazing helps protect endangered plants, butterflies, and bird species, significantly increasing biodiversity in the area. The reserve is the first place in the world where all three key species of European large herbivores coexist. Today, it spans over 350 hectares, making it the largest reserve of its kind in the Czech Republic. The site is managed by the conservation organization European Wildlife and contributes to international efforts to restore wildlife across Europe.
Wildlife conservation and rare species
Wild horses were reintroduced from the UK’s Exmoor region, where they survived for centuries. European bison, once extinct in the wild, now thrive here as part of one of the largest herds in the country. The aurochs, recreated through a breeding program, represent an effort to restore extinct species. Thanks to these animals, rare species such as the cross gentian plant and large blue butterflies have returned in significant numbers.Visit the reserve: trails, viewpoints and access
The Milovice reserve is easily accessible by train, with the site located just a 10-minute walk from Milovice station. Visitors can also arrive by car and park nearby.
