Hiking & Wandering

Feel free to be adventurous in Czechia

Welcome to Czechia! A country in the heart of Europe that offers one of the densest networks of marked hiking trails in Europe, a safe environment, and an exceptionally diverse landscape. Whether you are planning a short walk or a long-distance hiking route, in Czechia you have the freedom to choose how to make the most of your experience.

Feel free to be free in Czechia

Hiking in Czechia has a long tradition and tens of thousands of kilometres of well-marked trails connecting mountain ridges, protected natural areas, rock towns, river valleys, forests, and historic towns. What is more, recreational walking in Czechia is not about performance, but about choice and peace of mind. Many routes are also ideal for less experienced hikers.

A WORLD UNIQUE FEATURE: Czechia offers more than 44,000 km of colour-marked hiking trails (enough to circle the Earth!), making it a global rarity and one of the safest and best-marked environments for walking in Europe. An interesting fact is that these markings are maintained by so-called trail markers, trained volunteers mainly from the Czech Tourist Club. So you really do not have to worry about getting lost!

In Czechia, you can experience a great deal even in a relatively short time, with the option to change your plans at any moment. Clear signage and a dense railway network also allow for easy “hop on, hop off” travel without worrying about parking. Hiking is one of the most environmentally friendly forms of travel, and in Czechia it naturally connects with gastronomy, UNESCO-listed sites, crafts, and relaxation.

Czech rock cities are a unique natural phenomenon and one of the greatest treasures of hiking in Czechia. The dense concentration of sandstone rock cities – especially in North Bohemia and North-East Bohemia – creates breathtaking labyrinths, gorges, rock gates, and viewpoints that are hard to find elsewhere in Europe. Narrow passages, steps, and corridors turn every walk into an adventure. Ideal for slow tourism and trips that will reward you with stunning photos.

Broumovsko is well worth exploring, with the world-famous Adršpach–Teplice Rocks on one side and the Broumov Walls, forest trails, and panoramic views on the other. Simply step away from the main routes and you will find yourself in a landscape made for discovering without the crowds. Well-marked hiking trails make it easy to plan trips of different lengths, and the region is easily accessible by train.

Rock Cities: Feel Free to Take the Unexpected Turn

And we must not forget Bohemian Switzerland, a landscape of contrasts, valleys, steep rock faces, and vast forests. The area is known for its iconic sites (the Tisá Walls were used as filming locations for The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and the Pravčice Gate ranks among the top natural attractions in Europe), but the real experience begins between them: in quiet sections without the crowds. The region works perfectly for both short and longer trips.

And that is still not all: Bohemian Paradise is the oldest protected landscape area in Czechia and the only Czech member of the UNESCO Global Geoparks network. Within a relatively small area, it combines sandstone rock cities, castles perched on rocks, viewpoints, and open countryside. A typical experience is walking beneath towering rock formations, for example in the Prachov Rocks, from where you can reach the silhouette of a castle within minutes. The routes are varied, and the area is an excellent base for a multi-day stay.

Rock cities are also partly included in a long ridge route, including the legendary Hřebenovka Trail. It is one of the most beautiful long-distance hiking trails. It stretches over 100 km in total from the foothills of the Ore Mountains to the first hills of the Lusatian Mountains.

Long-Distance Routes: Feel Free to Follow the Horizon

And this brings us to more ways to enjoy hiking in Czechia. Long-distance hiking routes here are not about performance or counting kilometres. They are about deciding to set out and letting the journey unfold naturally. You can walk for a few days, a week, or choose just one section. Step by step, the landscape, atmosphere, and rhythm of the day change. Mountains give way to forests and historic towns. This is how you discover Czechia in an authentic way!

THE CZECH TRAIL: The first official long-distance trail circling Czechia, with northern and southern branches totalling approximately 2,000 km. Thanks to its clear division into stages, it is ideal both for multi-day journeys and shorter sections. The route offers the very best of the Czech landscape.

For natural trails, we recommend the Toulava region, home to one of Europe’s best hiking routes and the first Czech trail awarded the prestigious Leading Quality Trails – Best of Europe certification. It leads through the deep Lužnice River valley, past historic mills and the towns of Tábor and Bechyně.

Another beautiful route runs through impressive rock massifs in the north-western part of the Jizera Mountains, within the Jizera Mountain Beech Forest National Nature Reserve. These beech forests became Czechia’s first natural site inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Sky Bridge 721, Dolní Morava

A WALK LIKE NO OTHER: One truly unique attraction is the Sky Bridge 721 near Dolní Morava. This suspension footbridge is 721 metres long and 95 metres above the ground, offering spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. In 2022 it was ranked among the world’s greatest places by TIME magazine.

Feel Free to Try This Too:

  • Pilgrimage routes: These pilgrimage routes are as diverse as the country itself, featuring monasteries, charming churches, small chapels, and other legacies of our ancestors. We recommend the Cyril and Methodius Route ⬈, which was awarded the title of Cultural Route of the Council of Europe in 2021.
  • Beer and wine trails: These themed walking routes combine hiking with gastronomy and beer culture, offering a slow travel experience with shorter daily stages, stops along the way, and the freedom to explore each region at your own pace – it is not about bar hopping, but about tasting local cuisine and regional products.

The best way to round off a day of hiking is to relax in Czech spas or feel free to choose another experience:
