The Great Square in Kroměříž

The Great Square in Kroměříž

In the heart of the historic Kroměříž

If you take a look around, you can still feel the atmosphere of a medieval market which was part of Kroměříž’s planning design in the 13th century. And you can also learn about the town’s historical development by visiting its civic as well as ecclesiastical monuments that surround the square’s landmark – the Baroque Marian Column, which was built after the plague epidemic in 1680.
The Great Square is the true heart of the city. The undisputed queen of the square is the Town Hall, which you will know by its 40 m high clock tower dating from the 17th century. You should not miss the Regional Council’s House in the lower part of the square, right across from the chateau. This house involved the reconstruction and combining of two older Renaissance houses and it served as a residence for members of the lower aristocracy and regional councils. And the third highlight of the square would be the Museum of the Kroměříž Region in house no. 38. The building dates back to the Renaissance with vaults and a portal from 1609. If you have time, there are three permanent expositions devoted to the town’s culture and history and also to Max Švabinský, a famous painter and engraver who was born in Kroměříž. An interesting element is also the fountain, built in 1655 as part of the city’s water supply system.
