What did Kroměříž look like earlier? You may catch a hint at the last of the three town’s gates, the so-called Mill Gate, which used to adjoin the old castle moat protecting the Kroměříž Chateau. Later, the Archbishop’s Grammar School was built next to it. It is still in operation and is part of the town’s architectural heritage.
The Mill Gate guarded the path to the buildings of the nobility, especially the bishop’s mint, the lords’ mill and the brewery. The gate was under the control of the archbishop and patrolled by his guards, for whom a guardhouse was built in the 2nd half of 19th century after the defensive moat was filled in. A corridor led through one of its levels from the chateau through the Mill Gate all the way to the Church of St. Moritz. The Archbishop could thus walk unseen from the chateau to the church. The corridor used to pass through the Archbishop’s Grammar School, which originally served as a preparatory school for study in the seminary.
